Shawn Burch has been directing summer day camp prorams for over 25 years. "Camp keeps me young" states Shawn, who muses at being a part of camping programs for over 40 years. Her expereinces as a young YMCA camper influenced her decision to be an educator. A graduate of Cal State Northridge with a degrees in both Recreation and LIberal Studies and Education, she is a full time middle school teacher as well as camp director at Camp Keystone for the past 9 years. Shawn believes she has the perfect job. "I have the uniques opportunity to get paid for the two things I love to do-teach and play. Camp allows me to enrich so may children's lives and get to know them on a different level than I would as their teacher. Where else can I talk with kids about their hopes and fears and try to help them become successful, contributing young members of the community? And where else could I sing, cheer, ride horses, row a boat, and take the leap of fairth on the zip line, knowing that I am supported by everyone out there? That's certainly not in the job description of the average ol' English teacher.
When I decided to open a summer day camp I envisioned an environment where children could experience all the things I wanted as a child - to be acknowledged as an individual, to be adventurous and explorative and to have a memorable summer vacation! Camp Keystone is that place. Located on over 30 acres in the Santa Monica Mountains, our grounds offer a lush, park-like environment with masses of shade trees and 4 acres of irrigated green lawn. We are accredited by the American Camping Association, we practice the applicable health and safety regulations and guidelines to insure your camper's happiness and well being.
I have been privileged to be around children for more than thirty years, with 12 years experience running Camp Keystone. In addition to directing Camp Keystone, I'm a consultant for other day camps and a parent of twins! What I want for all my campers is what I also want for my own children, a place to learn, trust, grow and let the imagination soar!
